Lumbee Talk

Lumbee Talk

Lumbee English is a specific dialect that is distinctly different from traditional southern accents. This special dialect can still be heard today in the pronunciation of words and vocabulary used by many Lumbee people. Colonialism and the merging of several tribes may have stripped the Lumbee of their native language(s), but we still communicate in our own unique way and that my friends is cultural preservation. We encourage Lumbees no matter where they are to use their dialect.

Bacca - Tobacco

Ellick - Coffee with sugar

Pastry - Chicken and Paysta is a Lumbee spin on southern chicken 'n dumplings

Collards - the greens of our people

Fatback - whats greens without a little fatback or whiteside meat
